Bird Box: Barcelona

  • TRIGGER WARNING! Lots of suicide content!

We return to the world of Birdbox with more, more, more and more questions! Thank you Netflix kmt!! As we try to understand this universe we are left with more migraines and nose bleeds… but we will keep coming back for more!!

Birdbox takes a break from the streets of Detroit and introduces us to a fresh new cast through the town of Barcelona. We meet Sebastian who is traversing this world with his daughter Anna, straight away you get that Last of Us feeling. As they progress, they meet different camps and groups in which many meet their demise. This time around there are more hazards and dangers to avoid so it makes for some good dramatic, intense scenes.

The cast is minimal but effective here. Everyone does their job excellently. Mario Casas plays Sebastian. His displays of pain and grief are too level. He really sells the character. Georgina Campbell is our source for English dialogue. She’s also excellent with showcase of past trauma. Our child actresses Naila Schuberth and Alejandra Howard put on good performances showing us their potential of bright futures. Leonardo Sbaraglia plays the somewhat big bad Father Esteban. The cult leader feeding the evil of this world.

The decision to keep the dialogue in Spanish and inserting English were necessary drove the authenticity of the film. I opted to watch it subbed and it made it more engaging.

The passion in actors shone through whether it was their grief, fear or even relief.

Although most of the film takes place in the day time it still felt quite dark. With a lot of dark tunnels and hallways the lighting of the show was excellent and always kept us the viewers in sight. There was a more haunting feel to this edition of the film. With so much narrative focused on the psyche and emotions we’re thrown deep into some really good and appealing storylines. There are some high suspenseful scenes, one to mention are the scenes from day zero. The running through the streets in the city was some good cinematography. There are some gruesome and dark deaths. Although quite gory a lot of it is censored but they do well to implant the idea in your head. Death of the movie for me, bus tyres!! Insane!!

This iteration of the universe gives us a view from a different angle and it’s enjoyable. There are more dangers this time round from the creatures, the seers, and the impenetrable blind folk. We get the viewpoint of what seems to be a disciple of these creatures and what it’s like to be on their side. We also get a view of their level of power as over 2 films we learn they cannot go indoors but, in this movie, they seem to have ways to have no limits or boundaries. We witness their grand manipulation skills and how they influence characters into this sort of religion with promises of reuniting with past family etc. it’s an excellent redemption story.

It’s a good film. Fairly short. One thing it does need and you might find this weird but it needs a grand big warning stating “SUICIDE TRIGGERING”, because there is a lot. It’s a must watch if you enjoyed the first. You will get a bit more insight into this mysterious world but we are still left with a lot of questions especially with such a cliff hanger ending. Recommended watch!!

Who would you be? A survivor or a seer? What do you think the creatures are? Angels? Demons? I feel like we need a Birdbox: Ghana, why? I don’t know, I just want to see it Lool! React and comment below…

  • I enjoyed this movie more than the first one. Somehow you feel like this should have been the first one. When watching it I also kept thinking of Money Heist and the format of city to city
