Theres a few pieces to address here which will work for some folk and not for some. I’m sure twitter/x is going to love the whole story line of where the wife is covering her mans bills to drive the convo around 50/50 bill paying so I see what you did there Tyler (you naught naughty) I like art but this whole narrative in Hollywood where art is some seductive tool is weird to me and even worse in this film its not used very well. Its predictable and simply put quite dry. This whole 50 shades of melanin is so boring now, find another angle ah beg. We are plagued with Tyler Perry’s paper thin writing this time round with unadorned characters and complex plot lines. We just cant connect with these characters as they are so one dimensional and tedious.
There’s this whole family dynamic which I think if given more attention could have been something. Kal is this mummys boy who lets his mother disrespect his wife every chance she gets. Proper mother in law from hell stuff. The family beef then transpires to the court room and by this point the care is gone. The writing then overcomplicates itself like almost to say “hey this drama film is going ok oh yh wait its supposed to be a thriller” lets just shoe horn some crazy, psychological, thriller plot line in quickly to wrap it up. That final third is so terrible. Cringe after cringe plot twists reveals really left a bitter taste in my mouth. The movie is centred around a murder investigation by the end everyone is just a casual murderer and just bat shit crazy… (what) we are left with so many questions and no closure because of this rush to wrap it up. Did Jimmy find the girl? What was the overall plan of the family? Why did they need Mea dead? The plan could have gone ahead fine no? why did Mea walk off like she’s starting her own justice league? What kind of block of flats just has all residents go downstairs to a sex dungeon? Do you need a key? What time does it start and finish? Send me the addresss in the comments… its for a friend of mine J
All in all it has the typical Perry ingredients like seduction, adultery, marriage, family etc and usually they land ok but not so much here. With his new deal with Netflix we’ve got about another 15 of these to go but hopefully they are not sequels, they are original and most importantly better.
Is this Tyler Perrys best film? Were you also waiting for Madea to pop out at some point? Would you like to see a sequel?
