My Adventures with Superman

  • Supes is back! In this anime type setting!

Giving all the DC drama with reboots etc we got this new animation out of nowhere and it actually gives something fresh, new and enjoyable…. is it a bird, is it a plane… no its KenKen’s Review!!!!

The title is quite misleading giving the impression that the show is due to center around Lois or someone else whilst Superman is a supporting character but that’s not the case and dont get me wrong, I’m not mad it. Lets just keep it real though. It’s a full Superman show. Clark Kent aka Clark Kent builds his secret Superman identity and embraces his role as the hero of Metropolis, while sharing adventures and falling in love with Lois, a star investigative journalist, who also takes Jimmy Olsen under her wing. Clark is in his early twenties in this so it has that almost teenage dim-witted feel to it as he’s discovering himself. It’s a new genesis for our boy wonder and it takes a new approach for his origins. Krypton has a different angle, Clark has a new suit, new enemies and new powers. I loved it!

Jack Quaid takes up the mantle of the man of steel this time round and he does a good job. He captures his quirkiness, innocence, kindness, dignity and courage well. It’s an easy job it seems and he done his job. Alice Lee is Lois Lane, our not so damsel in distress. Enthusiastic, boisterous and hard headed… she makes for an excellent Lois. Ishmel Sahid is the online gossip tabloid user Flamebird formerly known as Jimmy Olsen. He’s the catalyst between Clark and Lois and he does provide a good balance between the 2 characters. They are then some big names that make guest appearances and some recurring roles. Kari Wahlgren, Debra Wilson, Lucas Grabeel, Chris Parnell, Reid Scott and many more. It’s a decent cast.

With the show being on Adult Swim I did expect some adult themese but there was none at all. Animation was brought to us by South Korean studio Studio Mir creators of the likes of Voltron, Young Justice, Boondocks etc so you know the quality was due to be high. It’s really good animation, caught in the middle of animation and anime almost. The fight scenes do well to capture the magnitude around strength and speed with hits translating well and characters moving very fast. Character designs I was a fan of. Each character had a fresh take including Supes himself. They still embed the rip shirt costume change even though he now has a nano type suit which appears on and off. The fun I had with this was new characters coming onto screen and me trying to figure out who they are a recreation of. Parasite, Deathstroke and Livewire I totally missed till later episodes.

I enjoyed the show but it did fall short in some parts. For one Clark’s secret is figured out way too easily. I get maybe they wanted to focus on other story plots but it’s always a nice run up to the big reveal. The story took a big turn with Krypton being more of a world conquering race, I don’t think it fitted well.

One thing I loved most about it is Superman is back to taking a beating.

Only the old school DC animation fans will know what im talking about. You, new schoolers will be used to superman just showing up and winning the day with ease. Back in my day Superman would take a hell of beating before conjuring up the strength to win the day. He’s back to that formula here.

I was captivated by the show’s thrilling storytelling and stunning visuals. The way it brought Metropolis to life and showcased Superman’s heroic feats was truly impressive. The show’s portrayal of his unwavering commitment to justice and the challenges he faced demonstrated his depth as a character. With each episode, I found myself on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting the next adventure. It’s an exhilarating and heart-warming series that truly does justice to the iconic Superman legacy. One to add to his catalogue.

All in all, it’s a recommended watch for me. Season 1 consisting of 10 episodes of 25min makes it an easy binge. Being in the UK also I wish it was more accessible. I’m sure it will be released via E4 or something since Cartoon Network isn’t around anymore. RIP Cartoon Network!
