Can Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh pull off the ultimate Cold War buddy comedy on Apple TV? its called Mayday.
Synopsis
An elite U.S. Navy pilot embarks on a top-secret reconnaissance mission. Consequently, a catastrophic plane crash strands him deep behind enemy lines in Soviet territory. He subsequently forms a shocking alliance with a local resident to orchestrate a daring escape.
Cast and Performances
Ryan Reynolds delivers classic Ryan Reynolds fun, bringing his signature comedic timing, charm, and humour to the full formula. Admittedly, Reynolds can feel a bit much in certain scenes, occasionally forcing a joke that misses. However, a large majority of those comedic beats genuinely land.
Meanwhile, Kenneth Branagh completely steals the show as the absolute source of the action. He portrays Nikolai, a retired Russian state agent desperately keen on getting out of the country alongside his daughter. Branagh handles the immense physicality and brutal brawls with absolute finesse.
Furthermore, this serves as a solid buddy comedy because the on-screen chemistry is exquisitely electric. These two actors provide the exact tonal balance needed for a successful feature film.
Production
Technically speaking, the plane crash scene is so exceptionally well shot that it had my anxiety levels pushed straight through the roof. The action sequences remain both brilliant and hilarious, wonderfully accompanied by intriguing cinematography and striking slow-motion segments.
Moreover, while there are not too many overall, the action set pieces look genuinely cool. The stunt work shines brightly, and the brilliant fight choreography keeps viewers glued to the screen.
Review
Story-wise, the overarching narrative is not entirely mind-blowing. Instead, it functions as a fit story that proves absolutely perfect for streaming at home.
Beneath the laughs, a surprisingly heartfelt story weaves through it all. Themes touching heavily upon sacrifice, acceptance, and trust land quite well with the audience.
Ultimately, I recommend this film because it delivers a consistently fun time. It is the ultimate bus stop movie for a cozy evening. Additionally, make sure you stick around because there is a hilarious post-credit scene waiting at the very end.
