Synopsis
Twenty-five years after the original film enchanted audiences, the Owens family returns to face a deeper magical crisis. Sally and Gillian must rally together once again as new secrets and dark ancestral threats emerge from the shadows. Furthermore, a new generation of witches starts discovering dangerous abilities of their own. Consequently, the family plunges into a high-stakes race to shatter their infamous centuries-old curse.
Cast and Performances
Sandra Bullock remains completely magnetic as Sally, portraying cute, adorable warmth with effortless talent. Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman delivers a hilarious performance, spending her screen time delightfully prancing around the place. Together, these two act as the ultimate aunties of life, proving they still possess absolute star power and chemistry. Early on, framing sequences almost make them look like lovers rather than siblings, but this dynamic simply highlights the fierce power of love.
Additionally, Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing receive a genuinely fitting send-off. Their emotional moments carry real heart that anchors the entire chaotic narrative. Unfortunately, the younger generation faces an uphill battle. Joey King handles the heavy lifting, whereas Maisie Williams barely receives any screen time to flesh out her character. Whenever Joey and Maisie share a frame, their chemistry works, yet Sandra and Nicole effortlessly steal every single scene.
Production
Visually, Simon Duggan captures a distinct aesthetic that honors the original classic. Although memory fades regarding the 1998 classic, the camera techniques successfully evoke a cosy, tangible 90s atmosphere throughout the runtime. Furthermore, Rupert Gregson-Williams crafts an enchanting musical soundtrack that heightens every emotional beat and spellbinding sequence. Seamless animation and practical effects blend together nicely, creating an immersive world that feels authentically lived-in.
Review
Ultimately, Practical Magic 2 packs enough juice to run its course successfully, tackling curse-breaking lore and family loyalty with flair. The picture attempts an ambitious, fellowship-type journey across locations. Regrettably, this momentum gets severely undermined by a lacklustre villain plot point. This antagonist feels completely random and out of place. Zero build-up precedes this individual; he simply pops up out of nowhere, which proves thoroughly disappointing.
Despite this major narrative stumble, the film remains an undeniably fun time at the cinema. Naturally, audiences will wonder whether Joey King and Maisie Williams can genuinely carry this franchise forward. They eventually can, but only if future instalments give them equal footing. Right now, Sandra and Nicole possess far too much residual juice to step aside just yet. Fans will thoroughly enjoy the ride, minor villain flaws notwithstanding. This is a successful legacy sequel which does well to pass over the broom to the next generation… full witch pun intended.
