This felt like a real life manga. The aggression and crud here felt like anyone at anytime could get their head chopped off. These characters have meaning. They have real greaze. The violence here is a highlight. Although very gruesome and savage at some parts, like killing of babies, beheadings, boiling people alive etc there was an element of class and grace when it came to the Seppuku. Its for these reasons I cannot be a samurai. My loyalty aint built in a way where I cut my own belly out for you… no suh!
There is so much drama here with some amazing plot points. You have Toranaga’s son in his own trope to try and impress his father, Buntaro, husband of Mariko trying to fight for the affection of his wife, man like snakey Yabushige just trying to get one over everyone. Theres a lot of enjoyable substance here. My only let down was how it ended and even the fact it had to end… would have to see it branch off into more somehow.
On the whole, an amazing masterpiece. Emmy’s are pending and they should be. Drama, politics, entertainment at its finest. Feudal Japan was well represented from helmets, shoes, outfits, etc. Epic war set pieces, naval battles, cannon fights… its jam packed with superb brilliance. It’s a must watch. I wont be mad if they don’t carry it on…
