This album is a powerful comeback for Davido, as he reclaims his place in an industry that has seen immense changes during his absence. Since his last album in 2020, we’ve witnessed the global success of Afrobeats as a whole. We have had Grammy wins, platinum achievements and the rapid rise of a newcomer who has dominated the year 2022 in a remarkable manner. If you couldn’t figure out those 3 easy clues, I’ll still tell you.. Burna Boy, Wizkid and Asake!
Against the backdrop of the heart-wrenching loss of his young son, Ifeanyi. ‘Timeless’ arrives at a critical moment where fans have eagerly been waiting for Davido’s return. Despite my expectations of Davido to explore themes of loss, betrayal, and pain. He surprises with a simple, fun yet heartfelt album. Across the 17 tracks, he delves into his personal journey, his superstar status, the bliss of love, and the realities of his life.
Davido deliberately crafts a sonically balanced album that blends dominant and familiar genres, a departure from his previous albums with their individualistic templates. ‘Timeless’ prominently features Amapiano, a genre that has gained even more traction since Davido’s last release, as well as Dancehall, Ragga, Highlife, and Afropop.
While Davido aims to create a project that stands the test of time and appeals to a wider audience, he still stays true to his identity. His unique style, technique, approach, and thematic preoccupations remain intact.
The album kicks off with the mesmerising “Over Dem,” with its soothing saxophone production and Davido’s velvety vocals setting the tone for the entire album. Tracks like “Na Money,” featuring Caveman and Angelique Kidjo, and the Amapiano-infused “Champion Sound,” with Focalistic, further showcase the album’s captivating aura.
A standout feature of the album for me is Big Chief Skeppy! (Skepta), The grime legend is no stranger to Afrobeats, with his successful collab with another big African giant Wizkid. ‘U (JUJU) reminds of a summer afternoon drive, in a drop top Coupe *adjusts sunglasses*. The beat is magical and Skepta does a great job with complimenting Davido’s vibe.
Other noteworthy features include Morravey on “In The Garden,” Asake on “No Competition,” and Dexta Daps on “BOP.” Davido pushes the boundaries of his voice throughout the album, from duetting with Fave on “Kante,” to sultry lower register tones in “For The Road.” While we all know Davido is not known for being a vocal powerhouse. His effort and consistency in his singing throughout the album are evident.
Davido weaves different emotions seamlessly into the album, from longing for joy and love to a growing desire for inner peace. ‘Timeless’ is a project that exudes enjoyment and good vibes – perfect for creating a feel-good atmosphere that makes you want to relax and embrace life. It’s definitely an album that will undoubtedly have tracks on repeat.
Davido’s return with ‘Timeless’ is a triumphant one, delivering an album that is emotionally charged, sonically diverse, and incredibly enjoyable. It’s a testament to his artistry and ability to connect with his audience on a deep level. If you’re looking for an album that captures the essence of life’s highs and lows, while keeping you hooked with its infectious melodies, then ‘Timeless’ is a must-listen. Get ready to groove, reflect, and be captivated by Davido’s musical prowess.
