The Outlast Trials

  • TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OVER HERE...
Special thanks to Carl Cummings

Story:

The game plunges players into a mysterious world, revealing its narrative through trials and interactions with characters in a central hub. As a homeless test subject enslaved by a corporation experimenting with mind control, players endure trials to earn freedom. While the story isn’t the focal point, it provides a compelling backdrop to the game’s main elements.

Voice Acting:

Standout performances, particularly from antagonists like “Mother Gooseberry,” add depth to the game. Chilling and believable, the voice work enhances the psychological horror. Some minor characters lack the same impact, but overall, the voice acting surpasses average expectations.

Gameplay:

For single-player enthusiasts familiar with the Outlast series, the game delivers suspense and tension. The no-combat, run-only approach maintains a sense of helplessness. Although it doesn’t introduce groundbreaking elements, it executes genre staples well. However, always-online requirements and limited pause options may deter some players.

The multiplayer component disappoints, with lengthy trials and a hub disrupting the immersive horror experience. The matchmaking process is user-friendly, but the central hub feels out of place. Lack of pause options and always-online demands may limit the game’s appeal for those seeking a shorter, solo experience.

Combat Mechanics:

The absence of combat heightens the terror, requiring players to strategize using distractions and environmental elements. While enemy variety is sparse, the limited arsenal aligns with the game’s atmospheric focus.

Verdict:

The single-player experience excels, offering a well-executed horror formula. However, the game’s shift towards an online-focused model and the questionable addition of a central hub may deter fans of the franchise. Despite these drawbacks, the game’s strong voice acting and intriguing storyline contribute to its overall enjoyment. While not the strongest entry, it provides a unique twist for those willing to embrace its changes.
