  • Meet Joe Goldberg, our resident stalker! ⚠️ SPOILER WARNING ⚠️

This is one of the most twisted and enjoyable shows in the scene right now. I mean twisted in the most twisted and positive way LOOOL it really messes with your psyche to the point you want to see the psychopath WIN, ALL the time. Go on act up and make it out like im the only one haha. Cousin Joe just wants to be loved and wants to love someone wholeheartedly, nothing wrong with that right? Let me stop before police come to my door…

There are so many messages here. So many lessons. It’s a whole guide on what to do and not do in life. Show follows our pro/antagonist Joe Goldberg who is a bookkeeper who develops an obsession with an aspiring writer so begins to stalk and manipulate her life into courting her into a relationship. This formula is repeated season after season but they manage to keep it fresh with different risks, rewards and dynamics. It’s really as simple as Joe finds girl, falls in love, stalks her, kills everyone who poses to be an obstacle, gets her then somehow they die. Bro just wants “love” (pun intended). We are here for it.

The show is very well put together. It’s essentially a one-man show with supporting characters as we spend most our time listening to Joe monologue through all the episodes. As the viewer you get to listen to him wrestle with his conscious day in day out, it gives that relatable feeling because we all have that dynamic with our own conscious. The story has lots of twist and turns. Characters seemingly dying then returning later for revenge giving Joe little time to strategise how to get out of tight situations. It helps raise the tension and up the engagement as you’re going to want to see what happens next.

Penn is brilliant. He delivers his performance as Joe in such a way where you have no choice but to root for him regardless of all his wrong doings. His best displays is in his voice overs of the monologues. The “hmm” and the “well maybe” moments really leave you thinking “yes maybe he did have no choice but to kill”. He delivers a superior, creep and inexplicable lead character. This is not a good guy but he makes him alluring. The supporting cast also deliver well. You get to see Jenna Ortega in her early days… Theres also an underlining character that can easily be missed. The books. I took the liberty of looking up some of the books and they actually align with Joe’s actions and explains why he takes those authors thesis’ and twists them to fit his inscrutable bidding. The show runners do excellent by making his targets somewhat of your everyday Sally’s as to say its not just your “insta baddies” that a prone to obsessive stalkers… anybody can get it. I’d fully recommend taking up this show from season 1… now lets talk on the recent…

Season 4 (Part 1 & 2)

It’s been split into 2 parts for some reason, the 2nd part released in March. It starts off well with the usual Joe’s found a new obsession and he’s doing what he does best. It’s a new setting, new target and new issues. However with this season something felt off. They went in a different direction where it’s the hunter now being hunted. I always say if it’s not broken don’t fix it but also open to new ventures. For obvious reasons I love the new setting, London. Just adds on as a new character for me. I also enjoyed seeing actual English actors getting shots at roles with real accents. The new characters though I didn’t find interesting. They all felt 1 dimensional and just seem to be there for easy killings. None of them are likeable so you just can’t wait for Joe to hack them to pieces.

In this second part of the season they actually pulled it back to what we love and what works and I can even say they took it to the another level. We all loved Joe’s monologues but it was somewhat refreshing to actually have a whole character embody his internal dark side. To watch them go back and forth made it more interesting and made for a good twist. The dull characters have some development this time around and bit more fleshed out narratives. This time around they introduce better characters. Greg Kinnear is brilliant and always seems to secure these jerk prick roles and he executes them well. Special mention to Penn who directed some episodes this season.

You is a top tier show. However what makes a show great is knowing when to stop. We weren’t treated to the usual super cliffhanger at the end of seasons so not sure what it means this time round. Im personally happy to leave Joe here. How many times can 1 guy one fall in love, stalk the person, then kill them. A brilliant show that has run its course but no one tends to listen to KenKen. A recommended watch!

  • One of the hardest plot twists that puts all viewers to shock. Don’t lie to yourself, that was master level execution.

  • You know how secretly you watch a show, lowest key can see where it’s heading and how it’ll end by the last season. Take that concept and throw it out the window with season 4.

The writers had us with this one, an unexpected turn of events right at the end, sick series!
