This film was an eye opener for me because i didn’t know the Homeless World Cup was a thing… and now i’m going to tune in. the highlight of this film are the characters. They really put together the multicultural cocktail that England is. 2 black dudes, 2 white dudes, an Arab and a mixed race dude. Filmed in Rome but that sounds like a trip down shepherds bush market right?
Callum Howells as Nathan was the stand out for me. His story arc of being a recovering drug addict made for some emotional scenes. You had Cal trying to reunite with his child, Aldar escaped from Syria, Kec was a gambling addict etc. these are all stories which whole movies can really be built on. There were some cool side stories with the South African and the Japanese teams which made for some funny and heartwarming moments. There was a nice homage to the Cruyff turn and a big shoutout to West Ham. There is a nice turn in the finale where it decides to go the unpredictable route and i liked it Its a film that touches on team work, humility, brotherhood and redemption. All big and important lessons that we can all use in our everyday lives.
Overall i feel it delivered on its goal of that feel good wholesome vibe. There was some bad pacing and timing at some parts but they were minimal. A few tear jerker moments hidden in there. Its a recommended watch… and good to see Ward in a different kind of role.
Did you enjoy this film? Did you know about the Homeless World Cup? Are you going to tune into the next one?
