Tyler Perry wrote. Tyler Perry directed. So you know what that means… I’m joking its not all bad. Divorce in the black has one of the most dramatic and insane openings. The exchange will have you thinking (WTF)! I was genuinely shocked. That’s the format for most TP films, it starts high then slowly declines. Sometimes fast. I have to talk about this… its a funeral, pastor giving a message of comfort to the family and switches it up on some “your son is a piece of shit and he’s going to hell” instantly you sit up to try understand wtf! There are some scenes which have the trashy TP signature. One terrible sex scene followed by a poorly choreographed fight scene. Yuckkkkkk. There’s a lot of water in this film as in tears and rightly so because there are a lot of triggering themes.
As always the expected lessons are present. Importance of friendship , love, marriage and family. Its a journey as we see Ava’s weak demeanour and grow and flourish into a strong black woman. It was weird because the terrible writing tried to make us believe after all she endured she overcame it all in a week?? So unrealistic. If I have a burger and drop it by accident… trust and believe 3 weeks later i will still be thinking about that burger… sis is just super strong is she? Ok Tyler! The light skin bruddas continue to prove they all psycho! Don’t come at me, speak to TP. All his villains seem to be light skin!
I liked the film. Its not the best TP film and certainly isn’t the worst. Started so well and went downhill very fast in both the story telling and acting. Its a terrible ending but with a good beginning and meedi middle there’s something to enjoy here, streaming on Prime Video.
Is this Tyler Perrys best movie? Is it time for him to give other writers a chance? Do you think anyone is challenging him in those writing sessions?
