The Apprentice provides an insightful look into Donald Trump’s ascent to wealth in the ’70s till the ’80s and his collaboration with lawyer Roy Cohn to achieve rapid financial success during that time. The film explores Trump’s ideologies and their relevance to the current state of the US, prompting viewers to contemplate the implications. It illustrates how he employed questionable methods to expedite the growth of his business empire, while also highlighting the significant influence of Roy Cohn in Trump’s early real estate career.
The cast delivered strong performances, particularly Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn, who portrayed a compelling mentor to Trump. While I initially felt Sebastian Stan’s portrayal was lacking, he eventually captured Trump’s personality traits and obnoxiousness quite accurately. Maria Bakalova’s portrayal of Ivana also effectively supported Sebastian Stan in highlighting the controversial nature of Trump’s personality as the movie progresses making it believable.
The third act of the film was where the real switch up happens, it shows the character’s transformation as he progressed in wealth and Ivana’s discomfort in their marriage alongside the tide of the wealth changing, which parallel Trump’s controversial personality as he ventured into politics in the present day and is seeking greater power in office.
Overall, the movie was a surprisingly entertaining and insightful watch, shedding light on the true events that happened and informing viewers about Donald Trump and his early years in real estate and his alliances with other political and famous figures in New York.
