Never Let Go is a film that, on the surface, promises a tense, gripping thriller but ultimately falters in its execution. From the opening scenes, there’s a sense of potential. The atmosphere is moody, the cinematography slick, and the setup makes you lean in. There’s a lot here that could have worked, but unfortunately, the movie collapses under its own weight, particularly in the middle and end. One of the film’s strongest aspects is its jump scares. They’re well-timed and effective, jolting the audience with a precision that keeps you on edge. If you’re a fan of the horror-thriller genre, you’ll appreciate these moments that catch you off guard, even if they sometimes feel a bit formulaic. But good scares alone can’t save a poorly constructed story. The pacing slows, dragging the story into confusion, leaving you waiting for something impactful that never quite arrives.
The real disappointment is the ending, which feels rushed and unsatisfying. It’s almost as if the filmmakers didn’t know how to tie the narrative threads together, leading to a conclusion that lacks both emotional payoff and logic. The final scenes fall flat, robbing the movie of the punch it needed to redeem its earlier missteps.
Despite the film’s potential, especially with a star like Halle Berry leading the cast, Never Let Go is let down by weak writing. The story just doesn’t hold up, and the characters are often one-dimensional, leaving the audience uninvested in their fates. This could have been a much stronger film with tighter plotting and more attention to character development.
