So for what works in this movie? Not much. Eddie and Venom bicker, split up, enemy arrives, realise they work better together, reunite, defeat enemy. Sound familiar? No this is not a review of the first Venom movie. It felt like a copy and paste with even worse plot points. Another swing and miss for me. With the eventual mergence of the MCU and Spider-Verse i think i speak for all when i say we are all going to struggle accepting such a likeable character like Eddie Brock as the villain. On top of that we have Tom Hardy who is just a legend (pun intended) and works much better as a hero than a villain.
There is comedic value here with the constant restraint of eating human heads debate, the bullying of the new fiancé etc. that’s where the pros stop. Beyond that is downhill. You have the poor attempt of an origin story which left us with carnage being born of a bite off Eddie Brock. I didn’t know if this was to be symbolic of the whole spider bite etc 🙄. You have Venom who is actually capable of wandering off without Eddie so could easily go and eat whoever and come back, you had Shriek who felt like she was gonna break into her Pirate of the Caribbean accent any min as she had the same wig from her Calypso days, Woody felt like wasted talent as when he was on screen he was good but again minimal screen time. You then have the forced entry of introducing a new symbiote, Toxin which then just tells us… another copy and paste incoming!
The highlight of the whole film will be the post credits scene and that says a lot. There wasn’t much too it, it was just an announcement to confirm Venom is coming to the MCU.
Overall it just wasn’t an improvement from the first film and the first film was trash. Tom is a perfect casting but only to play Agent Venom. Hopefully joining the MCU may help restore some hope.
How do you feel about Venom in the MCU? Is it time for us to see Agent Venom who Tom suits better? Did you like this movie? You enjoy Carnage’s introduction? Let’s discuss….
