Yes its another black movie… but guess what… not a single slave in sight 🥳🥳 Now think if Django and his Mrs basically were Adam and Eve and populated the whole of Texas lol thats what this movie is. Its witty, its charming, its gritty and full of heavy one liners. It has a 2hour runtime that just flies by you as you are heavily engaged from scene to scene. Reason for this mainly falls on the cast. Lovable and exciting characters in which I hope can get some form of prequel spin offs.
The plot is your typical revenge slope so not much to spoil there but the twists in all of it are explosive. The action I enjoyed very much. Gory, blood soaked and no lackof. Very reminiscent of Django. The setting of this movie is epic. Naturally i could be biased but a western in which the ethnicity of the population has been somewhat inverted gave it a very feel good factor, almost like that first time you saw the tech savvy land of Wakanda unveiled. It all felt very comfortable.
The cast not only ate up the screen when they were present they feasted on it!! The emotions, expressions, dialogue and interactions were all top notch and well thought out. For such star studded cast ample screen time was given to each. Jonathan, Idris, RJ, Edi, Lakeith etc. epic displays. Idris I’ve always preferred in the villainous roles, its a perfect fit and where we see his best work. However the stand outs for me, the black Empresses! They fully stole the show. Queen Regina, Zazie and Danielle. Top top talent. Regina’s monologue in the prison.. POI! Amazing soundtrack, what I loved most about it is they remixed your everyday hip hop songs to feel more western to connect with the visuals. Masterpiece.
Overall a great ensemble, idea, vision, soundtrack and story. Film did feel a bit overly stretched than it needed to be, it would have lost none of its essence if it was 20min less. Better yet that extra time could have been used on some more character development. A recommended watch nonetheless!
