Harold and the purple crayon wins me over because it is a kids film. Very fun, very simple and very easy for my daughter to digest… and that counts as a win. For me as an adult it was just full of plot holes and as its a kids movie we are good with that. Zach is the highlight. Very reminiscent of a Mr Blippi. On a positive path of just trying to help any and everyone as he on his quest to find his “father”.
Characters like Moose and Porcupine were literally as intended, just side characters. Porcupine had some fun scenes as they branched of her own side story. They had these police characters who felt like they were supposed to be more but they came to nothing in the end. The finale got a bit messy as it went for the more elaborate fantastical climax which in turn kind of lost its heart. I personally would have gone for a much different ending which would have put bigger smiles on the kids faces.
Overall, Harold PP is a streamer for me. Its not a terrible movie, its just a standalone movie thats very generic with iffy CGI. Giving the concept of the franchise it would have been safe to assume there will be some gigantic climatic scenes that would warrant the big screen but unfortunately not. However your kids will love it. The elaborate colours and focus on imagination would really brighten their day. Its a one off. Take the kids for the big screen they will enjoy it as i dont see it breeding any sequels or being something of a franchise.
