Series now all link with the movies and everything is canon. I love it. This movie really went for something fresh and original and I love that they took so many risks.
The art style, the sort of cell shaded 3D animation aesthetic works brilliantly. It was like watching a video game play out and its a good way to separate the movies from the series. It had these comic outputs that were reminiscent of the Adam West batman show, it worked.
Story wise again they step away from your usual “Goku and Vegeta save the day” and I enjoyed that. It was a fresh take, different dynamic, giving other characters some time to shine. Some old retro characters return which was a nice throwback and are joined by some new faces. I’m a big fan of when major franchises acknowledge their trending memes and incorporate it into their content. Blink and you will miss it ? The conversation goes:
Pan: I wana grow up and be even stronger than my grandpa
Piccolo: (with a disturbed shocked and annoying facial expression) what do you mean?
(Then realising she’s talking about Goku not himself… whom he clearly feels is more a father to Gohan than his actual dad is so feels like the actual grandpa)
It’s absolute golden comedy!
Piccolo and Gohan actually take centre stage and put on a great show to show their actual father son dynamic which is amplified in the final battle when Gohans last attack to end the battle is that of his “fathers”. It was lovely!
Recommended! The franchise was revived with Dragonball Super and they are doing a great job of sustaining it.
How did you find it? Prefer it dubbed or subbed? If you can spare a minute to get away from your studies ? leave your thoughts in the comments….
