A vibrant, cultural, bright and emotional showcase. Every scene with Viola and Thuso was electrifying. Emotions were high, tension was at max, every exchange was felt both positive and negative. There was a scene so intense that I almost shed a tear and in the dialogue Viola says “kill those tears” and I snapped out of it lol. A movie based off a true story that took place in a very real place, Africa. Apart from 1 or 2 individuals the accents were well done. I was impressed. Boyega with a stellar performance. He defo reached into his childhood memories of his dad for this display LOL. One letdown about the movie are the scene transitions. The flow was a bit off where it could go from an intense dialogue exchange straight to sleep to a non existent sex scene. It through the pacing slightly off.
The fight scenes are epic. Viola’s display as a physical astronomical warrior was amazing. In tip top shape and doing majority of her own stunts and choreography. Same for Lashana, Sheila, Thuso, Adrienne etc. amazing action scenes. The whole premise of displaying the strength, beauty and ferociousness of this real life group was more than than well. The chants, the songs, the dances, it just felt like Africa, not Hollywood, like Africa! A very very powerful movie although altered to fit a more positive narrative.
More than recommended. This movie will light up any little girls eyes! So encouraging and empowering! All Hail King Nanisca! Agojie! Wusu!
What did you think of how the handled the slave trade storyline? Would you have preferred a younger Woman King? Perhaps Lupita who was offered the role first? What was your best part of the film?
