Why not just create a fantasy film? There is nothing wrong with that! Why you gotta embed the real world into these films 🙄 in other words we didn’t/won’t need Cole! Didn’t need his backstory, his family etc.
Now heed my words. This movie is NOT the one but there is potential. On no planet would I have thought we’d have a merciless character like Kano provide the comedic value in the movie. He was excellent. Casting choice, dialogue, quirks, all of it. The story behind his eye laser was sickening! Jax casting just wasn’t it unfortunately. The whole casting except sub zero and scorpion was not it. I say again just make it a fantasy world! This whole plot point of “digging deep to find your inner power” FOH! Absolute trash. The story was ruined. There’s a whoooooole video game franchise with a lot of story to pull from. Pick one! Sub zero was the star of the film. Mileena was underused and I found that very disappointing. her stance and position in that universe warrants more than just to be some henchman.
The action i was impressed with. The choreography from the opening scene alone was epic. It only got better and better. The fatalities were well orchestrated although some felt shoe horned in. Loads of cheesy moments but it did feel like they included those parts as throwbacks to the original films and games. 2nd half of the film is where it was all at especially the climatic fight. there is loads of potential here. They have signed on for 4 movies so only way is up I guess.
All in all they were banking on our nostalgia to draw us in and it definitely worked. As a huge fan of the franchise I somewhat enjoyed it, as a standalone movie its definitely was not cinema worthy and all it was missing was a Z list level actor aka Nic Cage. Fan of franchise come get your fix otherwise it can wait.
