The Last Of Us

  • Are Joel and Ellie the batman and robin of GenZ? 👀

Mr Jose Pedro Balmaceda Pascal commonly known as Pedro Pascal. Newly crowned Chief Executive Master Babysitter of Hollywood. If you ever need a baby/adult sitter there is no better person qualified, across the whole galaxy. The Last Of Us is technically just a viewing into his real life resumé.

The Last of Us (TLOU) is based on the critically acclaimed video game by Naughty Dog and is a story about an escort mission through a post apocalyptic world which is being ravaged by a deadly virus which turns people into violent zombified creatures. Our guide through this world is Joel played by Pedro who inherits a mission of escorting a young girl to a location as she potentially has the cure in her blood to heal the world. It’s a decent show and brilliant franchise and I can say whole heartedly that it goes toe to toe with The Walking Dead (so far)

My main issue with this show is I have lived through it already through another medium. I’m a gamer and it kind of disappoints me that I lack major surprises as I watch this through compared to folks new to the franchise. Show is still enjoyable plus it’s also a bit cool to experience the light, new and fresh amendments to story plots. The game portrays the infection spreading via spores in the air, the shows portrayal is via hosts touching each other with tentacles through the mouth. It sort of works but nonetheless it’s not the highlight of the show and doesn’t take much away from it.

Reminder! Regicide show: means a show/film in which no matter how big of an actor you are in the industry, any and every character can die. For example: Game of Thrones is a regicide show.

What I love most about this show is it’s a regicide show at its maximum. I say maximum because plot armour doesn’t exist here. Not for kids, dogs, cats whatever you can think of. ANYBODY CAN GET SMOKED AT ANYTIME!  We love it. You get to meet some really interesting characters and the writers do well to dive into their backgrounds and flesh them out properly. Episode 3 for me was the most compelling. Although it differs way off the game in terms of Bills character and how things actually play out. However it isn’t cannon so takes nothing or gives nothing to the main story. The episode is dedicated to engaging us in to the core story of 2 characters over a 15 year span and it does an amazing job as a standalone.

The show is a riveting expedition in which the settings and locations are so captivating they are embedded as extra characters, adding layers to the plots. Our main characters display how a complex relationship over time can develop into a strong family orientated connection. Pedro is stern and rigid. Showing his full emotional expressions and full signs of how one can’t simply just get over the loss of a loved one, you carry it with you everywhere. Even in a world where there is a lot of death he shows one does not get used to it and displays his pain well each time. Ellie on the other hand is the light of the show. Bella Ramsay gives a very different performance to what we are used to in the game. She makes it her own I guess. She’s the little joy you find in this dark world. The writers play with that, as she goes through these experiences and is forced to make some hard choices she loses a bit of herself and it then becomes a case of how much of herself can she hold onto before she fully drifts to the dark side. She is the balance that Joel needs. It’s a beautiful and well balanced dynamic that works very well.

The show supervises the tense haunting atmosphere well. The monsters are well designed almost identical to the game and they are well presented. You get that rush, gritty and unnerving feeling when they are on screen. The Clickers they did a brilliant job with. Ripped right out of the game and for that reason they were perfect.

Overall a decent show which the non familiars will no doubt praise whilst us gamers will find it adequate. I don’t agree with the statements like “best tv series of all time” that’s a big stretch. It’s definitely a recommended watch.

Do you want a season 2? Which characters did you resonate with best? Did you play the game before or after the show? Look around you, which one of your friends ain’t making it in a zombie apocalypse? React and comment below…

  • Very very good. Not normally a fan of sci-fi or anything too far away removed from reality like zombies but this show does well to provide a good story alongside, even though it’s very much in line with the game, the acting out of the storyline is elite.
