  • The Black Mafia Family came out to shine!

It feels like he cant miss at this point! 50 Cent just keeps churning them out, over and over again. I’ll say outright any show in which you have the Doggfather Snoop Dogg as a priest, who is ready to bust his strap, at the alter, mid service? I’m going to binge the hell out of your show LOOOOL…

Influenced by real life events, set in southwest Detroit, we follow 2 brothers in the 1980s from a working class family who make the conscious decision to uproot themselves by any means necessary to new heights financially. By that I mean built themselves a drug empire and became one of the most influential crime families in the US. The format of the show I like. Always kicks off with some narration from the real life counterparts they flows into the flashback scene which in essence is the whole show. As much as we follow the drug and crime stories they dive deeper here into family homes and personal lives, so there’s something really enthralling here to take in. They also dig into side characters stories and how their lives cross paths with the brothers giving the show a lot of substance and variety.

One thing that is imprinted very well here is the aesthetic. It actually feels like the 80s. They went with this brown/reddish grade on the lens and it just worked. From the music department to costume to vehicles to phone props, it really does feel like a whole Time Machine. No stone was left unturned. The soundtrack is straight out of a retro record shop and it just fits so well. I love it.

50 Cent finds a way to draw us even closer with these characters by hiring the real life Demetrius Flenorys son to play his dad’s character. With no acting experience prior he gives a stellar performance. What I’d give to be on set to see how a father instructs his son on how to mimic himself properly, hilarious. Da’Vinci plays his brother and does a good job. His journey from music to acting has been impressive, setting well into the industry.

Unlike 50s other produced shows where there is quite a heavy focus on sex scenes, the focal point here is story.

A few good ones to mention the story around the parents marriage, then managing the boys and their new outtake on money. You have the B Mickie element in which he has to choose between his loyalty to the boys and the well being of his mother. You have crooked cops doing what they do best, being crooked and a whole lot more. There’s something in here for everybody. There are so many interesting characters whether real or fictional and they just keep adding to the story creating more engagement.

The highlight of the show. Our very own, homegrown, Ghana blooded, StockSticks resident, flying our flag real high… Mr Eric Kofi-Abrefa. He pulls out the big big acting chops and puts a whole solo production. Portraying the infamous character Lamar. Loosely based on the real life Layton Simon. He brings the sinister and menacing edge to the show, the villain so to speak. However he has his own story in which you can feel for him and somewhat relate. That’s one thing the show does well, it dives deep in to character development to make it clear this ain’t a bunch of gangsters just mindlessly killing each other. There’s some trauma that got them here.

I don’t know the real life story of the Flenory family and I’m unsure how accurate the show is… as a production I struggle to see how we can squeeze more than 5 seasons of it. Unfortunately already it’s gotten quite repetitive. “We have plug, things go well, things go bad, we lose this plug, we find a new plug” it’s rinse and repeat. If not for the sub plots being so rich and appealing I don’t think the show would last long. As the seasons keep coming out it does feel like the interesting stories are drifting further and further away from the brothers and the audience is more interested in for example, Charles “weak” shenanigans. All in all I still recommend this show. It’s a good watch and guaranteed to keep you engaged and entertained, I just don’t know how much longevity is left in the tank.

How many cameos have you spotted so far? You waiting for 50 to pop up at some point too, you know he’s going to soon, he loves it? How many more seasons do you predict? Only on this occasion, be like a snitch and leave all your thoughts in the comments…
