Blockbuster

  • RIP Blockbuster! We miss you... not this much!

The irony of the show is it’s on Netflix and it’s named Blockbuster, about the company Blockbuster, a business Netflix helped put through the guillotine to liquidation. You can’t write this stuff haha… so many things wrong with this set up… but we move…

The show kicks off just at the meltdown point of the company, as they are just shutting down over 9000 stores and this one store is remaining and is the main hub of the source material. We follow Randall Parks Timmy who is the manager of the store and is overworking himself to keep the business afloat amid the rise of the streaming era. Within this main story we have sub plots of love, relationships, parenting and friendships… all coupled under an umbrella of comedy.

There’s heavy influence from shows like Superstore, Brooklyn 99 (same makers) and Community. You can feel the full blown Vanessa Ramos imprint here. The show struggles a lot. The comedy is dull and is easily missed, story is bland and it’s quite a feat to stretch it out to 10 episodes and the characters are given these weird outline traits that it feels so forced. You have this terrible underlining back story which is to eventually see Randall and Melissa eventually get together, there isn’t enough spark or chemistry between the actors to sell it. JB Smoove makes a few appearances and adds very little to the show even the attempt for his character to provide that sentimental story around his relationship with his daughter, it’s a big miss. There are a few feel good moments however they are scarce and far between.

Netflix again, gave away some free money here and I’ll be shocked to see another season get pulled up despite the terrible, terrible cliffhanger. I speak for all when I say we would have all preferred an actually documentary on how and why Blockbuster actually closed. Y’all will not last past episode 3, I did it all, for you… so, again, you’re welcome!! Don’t do it!

Name me 3 jokes you laughed at? Do you miss Blockbuster? How many episodes did you get through? Do you want another season? React and comment below…

  • Considering the history between blockbuster and the company who commissioned this nonsense (Netflix), i was expecting something far better than this, maybe a little petty ????????. All it ended up being was a poorly scripted and acted show, that made zero sense. Am i shocked that it was canceled, nah. Its almost like netflix knew this was trash to begin with, but wanted to be petty by comissioning 1 season, JUST so they could cancel their relevance to the movie world TWICE ????????????
