Forget everything you know about Marvel because Frank Castle just traded quips for sheer, unadulterated madness. The Punisher One Last Kill was a thrilling ride.
Synopsis
Frank Castle is deeply broken, hiding out after brutally slaughtering the infamous Gnucci family. The world is hostile, frenzied, and actively hunting him. He desperately wants to quit his life of violence, but the criminal underworld refuses to let him walk away.
Cast and Performances
Jon Bernthal delivers a haunting, visceral performance as a shattered man driven towards suicide. He shares tragic, hallucinated conversations with his deceased family and old teammates. Deborah Ann Woll makes a heartbreaking appearance as Karen Page, a ghost tormenting Frank’s fractured mind.
Production
The fire scene boasts stellar production, kickstarting a sequence of gruesome, masterfully choreographed violence. An unusual soundtrack choice plays during the chaos. It brilliantly reflects how relaxed Frank feels during slaughter, a subtle detail most viewers will completely miss. Sadly, the CGI sections look remarkably cheap and require urgent fixes as you would have seen all the mock ups in its vitality.
The Review
The Punisher One Last Kill represents Marvel’s answer to The Raid, packed with magnificent, turned-up violence when the remaining Gnucci family orders a massive hit. However, the narrative often feels like a full-on filler episode with very little purpose. It needs a longer runtime and a much more fleshed-out script to truly succeed. Yet, when Frank debuts his fresh fade and clean shave, he beautifully accepts his heroic calling as the ultimate defender of the innocent. It is pure, violent entertainment, and frankly, I am not mad at it.
