Synopsis
Jack Ryan Ghost War takes us on a new adventure. When a covert operations mission goes sideways, Jack Ryan must navigate a web of geopolitical tension and intelligence conflicts. A global catastrophe looms, but the film ultimately trades espionage mystery for predictable explosions and a deeply anticlimactic resolution.
Cast and Performances
John Krasinski returns to the action man role here. While he is a great actor, seeing him with guns doing military business just didn’t feel right for me.
Fortunately, Max Beesley saves the day as the villain, Liam Crown. He delivers a super cool, menacing, and quintessentially British performance that anchors the conflict.
Meanwhile, Wendell Pierce takes on a surprisingly central role, steering much of the plot. We also finally get to see Michael Kelly bust his gun. He usually just dishes out orders in a suit, so watching him get active outside was genuinely refreshing.
Production and Craft
Visually, Ghost War treats its audience passively. The camera techniques fail to build the claustrophobic tension you want from a Tom Clancy thriller. Instead of creating atmosphere cinematically, the production relies heavily on an overbearing music soundtrack to tell you how to feel.
The Review
The frustrating part is that the basic premise has massive potential. The ingredients for a gripping spy thriller… covert operations, paranoia, and intelligence conflicts. They are all right there.
Unfortunately, Ghost War explains too much, too early, and too directly. A proper espionage film needs mystery, but this script spoon-feeds emotional context instead. Characters constantly use on-the-nose dialogue to state “how they feel” under pressure. Because of this, the audience never actually senses real fear, guilt, or loyalty.
To top it all off, the film ends exactly the way it started. The filmmakers clearly meant for this choice to feel poetic, but it feels like the total opposite. There is a reason this went straight to streaming; they know what it is, and now we know too.
