Legends is a fantastic new addition to Netflix’s collection and its inspired by a true story. Customs agents dive deep into the murky criminal underworld during Margaret Thatcher’s reign. They fast-track themselves to James Bond status while infiltrating violent heroin syndicates. Consequently, the mission forces these ordinary workers to juggle lethal double lives.
Cast and Performances
Tim Burke delivers a masterclass as Guy. He portrays the stoic, cocky gangster and the lovable husband with equal brilliance. Honestly, he deserves two separate awards for these distinct personas. Aml Ameen returns to our screens with undeniable charisma, proving he definitely still has it. Meanwhile, Steve Coogan provides essential comic relief as Don while displaying impressive dramatic range. Charlotte Richie excels as Sophie, balancing the paranoia of a loyal wife with bold, “in-character” grit. However, Johnny Harris steals every scene as Eddie. His character development and emotional journey represent the pinnacle of modern acting.
Production
Legends vividly captures the era through a gritty lens and a pulsing, nostalgic soundtrack. Sharp camera techniques highlight the escalating tension between rival Turkish, Greek, and Liverpudlian gangs. Furthermore, the visual style effectively mirror the grim reality of the growing heroin epidemic among the youth. The streets of London and Liverpool are well depicted… and it was excellent to see my old estate in Stockwell used as a set. Mummy we made it!
The Review
This thriller succeeds because it grounds the chaos in personal stakes. I love the concept of the “legend”, the fake identity agents must inhabit. The narrative brilliantly explores how being “in character” erodes their actual lives. It asks a haunting question: when do you become part of the system that destroys your loved ones? While the politics of the Thatcher era linger in the background, the human drama remains the priority. The script delivers high-octane double-crossing and profound quotes about showing strength under fire. Carter and Hakan make for great villains, very mysterious and sinister. The dynamic of the Legends team makes for some good drama as it has a balanced feel of a family… the hot head, the funny one, the smart one etc. it’s a really fun group. Ultimately, Legends is a beautiful story about a man unsure which of his two lives he truly wants. Please give us another season immediately.
