Step into the world of demigods, Greek mythology, and a whole lot of lightning with The Lightning Thief theatre production—currently showing at the Other Palace Theatre. This dazzling performance left me buzzing with excitement, redefining how a beloved story can leap from page to stage.
First, let’s talk about Percy Jackson himself, played by Max Harwood. Resembling a young Henry Cavill, Harwood brought charisma and authenticity to the role, capturing Percy’s nerves and awkward charm to perfection. Subtle gestures, like fiddling with his jacket zipper, added layers to the character, making him relatable and grounded. Whether this was scripted or Harwood’s instinct, it worked like magic.
The cast as a whole was outstanding—there wasn’t a weak link in the ensemble. Vocally and performatively, everyone pulled their weight and brought infectious energy to the stage. Standout performances came from Paisley Billings and Jessica Lee, both of whom blended vocal prowess with dynamic character work. However, the true showstopper was Paisley’s Aunty M, whose flamboyant and energised portrayal was nothing short of mesmerizing. The centaur cheeks doeeeeeeeeeeeee
The production itself was a masterclass in creativity and innovation. The performers didn’t just act—they also managed stage direction, moving props and obstacles with seamless precision while staying in character. This added an extra layer of admiration for their versatility and stamina. Lighting was spectacular, and an unexpected augmented reality sequence had the audience collectively gasping in awe. Rob Rokicki on the music put together a solid playlist which I will be hoping to add to daily routine.
Audience engagement was another high point. Immersive elements, such as smoke effects, gusts of wind, and even water splashes, drew the crowd into the story. Despite the relatively small stage space at the Other Palace Theatre, the team utilised every inch with remarkable ingenuity, proving that limitations often spark the greatest creativity.
Special mention must go to the diversity of the cast, which represented a variety of races and nationalities, adding a modern, inclusive touch to the timeless mythology.
From start to finish, The Lightning Thief was a captivating theatrical experience. With its talented cast, imaginative staging, and immersive effects, this production is electrifying in every sense of the word. Catch it at the Other Palace Theatre for an unforgettable adventure—it’s a must-watch for theatre lovers and mythology fans alike!
