Uncle Denzel returns and this time he reunites with lil miss Fanning after 19 years since their last outing, who is all grown up now. If anybody asks what happen to KenKen just say “HE FELL” Hehe
Robert McCall finds himself at home in Southern Italy but he discovers his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. Teaming up with the locals and Emma Collins top secrets are unveiled and the threat levels heighten. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.
It’s a small cast but highly effective as everyone owns their roles well. Denzel Washington reprises his role as Robert McCall, showing the doubters that at the tender age of 68 years old, he can still hold his own. He picks up exactly where he left off. Extremely calm and stern with his voice, his threats are penetrating, very convincing he means what he’s saying LOL swift and tidy with his action and just all round excellent.
Even with a walking stick the Denzel swaggy walk shines through.
Dakota Fanning plays Emma Collins, a CIA agent. She’s one of the top dogs and plays it well, commanding and in charge. Her exchanges with Denzel are fun and nostalgic. To see both their growths in the industry is beautiful. Eugenio Mastrandrea plays Gio Bonucci. Captain Italy himself. He is the embodiment of the country. Side role but well performed. Remo Girone plays Enzo, the cute medic who nurses Denzel back to health. The epitome of “let me mind my own business and ask no questions”. Andrea Scarduzio makes for a good villain as Vincent Quaranta, sinister, swarve and appealing despite his motives.
Sony kept it small production wise but the quality was still high. The setting of Italy shone its beauty and culture which contributed to the emotional elements of the film. Cutting through the corridors and alleys of Sicily. The choice of around 40% of the dialogue actually being in Italian drove the authenticity. The sense of community and family was nice to see and implemented into the plots well. The killings are where the film shines. We are blessed with his signature intro/outro where he simply cleans out a whole building single handed. They use the first-person view at one point to show his movement and kills. Its epic, feeling like a video game. The gore is plenty this time around. More blood on display than usual.
I do wish we got to explore more of the chemistry between Denzel and Dakota. The screen time together although was great, was not enough. The marketing material really got us on that. The story is fairly simple and straight forward and doesn’t really try to do too much. It has a nice twist at the end which makes it all wholesome and even funny to some extent. With messages pointing at family, support, community and payback… it’s a decent action movie bringing the trilogy to an end. I’m not sure if this is a good enough story to end a trilogy but I guess it will have to do. A good watch. It can wait for digital release.
Was it a good end to the trilogy for you? Has Denzel still got a few more movies in him? Do you think the Equalizer mantle needs to be passed on? Which was your favourite kill? React and comment below…
The beginning part stung me though. As much as you want him to be this untouchable bullet proof human. He is still human????
Definitely watching it again!
