In The Shadows In The Shadows

Can a lie forge a champion, or will hiding the truth knock out everything you love? In the Shadows is a powerful story.

Synopsis

In the Shadows charts the extraordinary real-life journey of Ramla Ali. Escaping civil war in Somalia as a child, she arrives in London seeking safety and belonging. However, her personal battles are only just starting. Taunted over her weight during her teenage years, Ramla secretly steps into a local boxing gym. She undergoes a brutal transformation. Crucially, she must keep her fighting hidden from her strict family. Furthermore, this personal defiance rapidly evolves into an international legacy that challenges culture, faith, and womanhood on a global scale.

Cast & Performances

Jasmine Jobson absolutely commands the screen here. She does not possess a drop of Somali heritage, yet she fully embraces the accent, culture, and fierce physical demands. Now, could a Somali actress have played this role? Perhaps. However, Jobson completely delivers, so we must give credit to that sheer talent.

Meanwhile, Suhayla Ahmed delivers a stellar turn as young Ramla, capturing the vulnerable anger of youth. Consequently, the supporting cast elevate the drama further. Gershwyn Eustache Jnr shines brightly as her trainer, bringing grit and heart. Hodan Yusuf turns in a phenomenal performance as her mother, balancing fierce maternal love with cultural burden.

Production Values

Director Anthony Wonke originally intended to shoot a documentary. Thankfully, he possessed the artistic vision to construct a thrilling cinematic narrative instead.

The cinematography captures the sweaty, enclosed tension of London boxing gyms alongside grand emotional beats. Walter Mair’s music soundtrack builds intense momentum. Additionally, slick edit transitions emphasize every hit. Without resorting to animated gimmicks, the film relies on raw lighting and sharp camera angles to land its punch.

Film Review

Ultimately, Ramla Ali’s story demands celebration. In the Shadows explores how childhood trauma ripples into adulthood, driving a young girl to rebuild her identity from scratch. Picked on for her weight, Ramla makes the tough decision to slim down, train, and eventually box her way into history.

However, her choice to deceive everyone around her will spark intense debates. Did pure luck or divine providence save her from disaster? Naturally, one massive question lingers. If Ramla had received the chance to trial for Team GB, would Somalia have ever received a look in? That heavy thought stays with you long after the credits roll.

She navigates love, family expectations, religious boundaries, and her own burning desire for freedom. She operates as a full-blown rebel. Nevertheless, the wider message remains clear: always look at the bigger picture. In my opinion, schools across the country should show this movie. Every young girl needs to witness this level of resilience. In the Shadows comes exceptionally highly recommended.
