Rhino

I thought I understood what “protecting rhinos” meant — but Rhino (narrated by Tom Hardy and directed by Tom Martienssen) opened my eyes to a very different reality. It isn’t just a documentary about endangered animals — it’s about the danger within conservation itself.

Yes, there are armed clashes with poachers — the kind that instantly remind you this fight is literally life and death. But the most surprising and heartbreaking part is how rhinos can become threats to each other. Being fenced into limited spaces for their own safety means territorial battles break out between different rhino groups — sometimes with fatal consequences. The very thing keeping them safe is also pushing them into conflict.

Tom Hardy’s narration gives the film real weight — calm, serious, and emotionally grounded. And Martienssen’s direction is visually stunning while never shying away from the harsh truths behind the beauty. The contrast of massive animals inside controlled “safe zones” says everything without needing much explanation.

Rhino is powerful, honest and eye-opening. It shows the full story — not just the danger we’re saving rhinos from, but the danger they now face because of how we save them. If you care about wildlife, this one will stay with you long after the credits roll.
