Killer Whale was not so killer. Maddie’s life takes a tragic turn when her boyfriend saves her from a robbery, only to become immediate roadkill. This trauma leaves Maddie completely deaf and emotionally shattered. Seeking healing, she heads to the coast with her friend Trish. Unfortunately, they end up stranded on a rock in the middle of the ocean. A vengeful, captive orca decides to hunt them down for sport.

Cast and Performances

The cast is incredibly small, focusing almost entirely on our two leads. Maddie portrays trauma well, though her character spends much of the film looking bewildered. Meanwhile, the dialogue they share is pure cheese. They constantly shout about friendship and finishing school while a predator circles them. It is a bit of a mess, frankly. The acting feels strained when the script forces them to hype each other up during a crisis.

Production

Budget constraints scream from every frame of this film. You can clearly see how shallow the set pool is despite them being “miles offshore.” The special effects look like someone used a basic “remove background” tool from a free smartphone app. However, the flashback memory scenes actually look quite decent. The music attempts to build tension, but the visual limitations often undercut the intended atmosphere.

The Film Review

Conceptually, a “Free Willy” revenge flick sounds like a brilliant, bloody romp. Sadly, the execution fails to deliver on that promise. Most of the runtime involves two girls staring at water while the pacing crawls. The plot armour is thick, especially during a brainless fishing scene that defies logic. I found the orca’s intelligence fascinating, as it toys with them like a cat with a mouse.

The big twist reveals Trish caused the boyfriend’s death, but the emotional payoff feels unearned. Trish eventually tries to sacrifice herself in a climax that plays out quite stupidly. It backfires immediately, leaving the audience more confused than moved. Ultimately, Killer Whale lacks the bite needed for a creature feature. I certainly did not have a whale of a time watching this.
