The Synopsis

In Apex, Sasha is an adrenaline junkie whose stubbornness previously caused her husband’s death during a mountain climb. Consumed by guilt, she seeks solace in the wilderness. However, her trek turns into a nightmare when she encounters Ben. This isn’t a chance meeting; it is a calculated hunt.

Cast and Performances

Charlize Theron is absolute gold as Sasha. She perfectly captures that moody, lone-wolf energy while handling the gruelling physical demands of kayaking and climbing. She remains a total legend of the action genre. On the other side, Taron Egerton is genuinely terrifying as Ben. He sheds every ounce of his usual charm to play a proper psycho. His performance is chilling and proves the man has incredible dramatic range.

Production and Atmosphere

The cinematography captures the stunning, sweeping landscapes of the mountains and rushing rivers. This beautiful scenery creates a sharp contrast against the dire, dark situation. The visual effects making up the terrain feel visceral and dangerous. If you suffer from a fear of heights, the camera angles will certainly make your tummy squirm. The soundtrack builds tension well as Ben’s “dark arts” intentions come to light.

The Review

Apex explores themes of redemption and second chances amidst an insane, high-stakes scenario. The physical connection of the cable between the 2 characters creates some brilliantly tense psychological moments. However, the script ultimately feels a bit bland. We learn very little about Sasha’s actual purpose or her long-term plan. A traumatic event occurs, a fight ensues, and then the credits roll. It lacks the depth needed for a cinematic masterpiece.
