Hillman College is back, but are we ready for a heavy dose of nostalgic chaos?
Synopsis
A Different World throws us straight into the vibrant grounds of Hillman College. It focuses heavily on the modern Black college journey. We follow a fresh collective of students navigating life. There is the privileged student, the jail-bait freshman, and the hood girl on a scholarship. Furthermore, we meet an international student alongside the star athlete. This setup delivers classic high school style drama centered around friendships and romances. Meanwhile, parallel storytelling brilliantly tracks mothers and daughters experiencing identical hurdles.
Cast and Performances
The ensemble bursts with potential yet leans heavily into familiar tropes. Overacting and cheesy dialogue surface frequently while showcasing the Black American dream. Alijah Kai shines brilliantly as Rashida, serving pure ratchet intelligence. Conversely, Chibuikem Uche struggles as Kojo, failing to anchor a consistent British Nigerian accent. Moreover, the show transforms into cameo central. Several original cast members drop by, though an older adult storyline constantly overshadows the youths. These legacy characters feel entirely shoehorned in. Consequently, Gen Z viewers will likely struggle to care about them.
Production
Aesthetics and sound design elevate the entire viewing experience. The soundtrack sounds utterly brilliant. During scene transitions, you might genuinely break into dance. Independent artists finally secure well-deserved sync deals here. Furthermore, Auntie Abena dropping casual Twi phrases warms the heart instantly. The music, fashion, and culture genuinely shine. Additionally, a standout canteen sequence during a bomb threat brilliantly captures the chaotic essence of the past.
Review
Underneath the glossy surface, everybody is lying. The narrative aggressively tackles relationships, student debt, sexuality, STDs, and race. Yet, the adult subplots repeatedly drag the momentum down. Their time has simply passed. Hilariously, characters throw around the word entanglement constantly. Naturally, a certain familiar face pops up right after. Ultimately, A Different World reboot delivers high-energy nostalgia alongside messy modern drama.
