I struggled with this movie from the casting. I find it hard to accept Tom as the middle aged hero he’s portraying on screen regardless of Him being 25 in real life. It’s probably has do with him playing our friendly neighbourhood teenager. From a business and longevity angle I fully get it but for authenticity to the source material it lacked. Mark would have been an ideal Nathan despite his age and someone else could have played Sully… but we move.
One thing they do very well is the capture the iconic spectacles from the game. These scenes are so splendid in the video games that they had to do minimal to change them on the big screen. If you have played any of the games there will be no surprises here in the plot points. The movie is a mash up of all 4 games which could be a good sign and mean it’s all in their plan. As to say here’s all the nostalgia for the fan boys etc let’s get it out of the way as the sequel will be brand new and original, maybe. Antonio was very underused and I was looking forward to seeing more of him.
It wasn’t a great movie and it wasn’t exactly a bad movie. On the big screen I’ll say Nathan trumps Lara at this point. This movie is due to be forgettable but time will show us more on how they plan on developing this space.
Did you get any surprises? What was your best scene? Are you looking forward to this universe?
