Luck

  • I say luck is when an opportunity comes along and you're prepared for it.. Are you prepared for this?

If you ever wondered why you’re always a hater, this film will show you it’s because you just been breathing in the bad luck dust and blaming others LOL. Luck is a cute story told via squeaky clean animations with a lacklustre marketing plan because this film could have done well numbers wise.

The curtain is pulled back on the millennia-old battle between the organizations of good luck and bad luck that secretly affects everyday lives. Sam Greenfield is a clumsy, orphaned young woman whose life has been constantly plagued by misfortune and has recently been forced out from her foster home, much to the dismay of her younger friend Hazel, who is hoping to be adopted soon. One night, after sharing a panini with a black cat, she finds a penny she hopes to give to Hazel for her collection of other lucky items to help her get adopted. The next day, Sam notices that the penny has made her luck significantly improve. However, she soon loses the penny by inadvertently flushing it down a toilet then its coop heist mission to locate the penny and return it to its rightful place.

Sam is played by newcomer Eva Noblezada. It’s a great performance. Full of heart, enthusiasm and even showcases some singing skills. She does well to showcase Sam’s passion and empathy. Simon Pegg is brilliant and recognisable straight away with his husky distinctive voice as Bob the cat. His charm and wit are ever present and enjoyable. He definitely carries the film with his jokes and sarcasm. Hollywood royalties Jane Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg play the Dragon and Captain. They lend their experience in small but effective roles. We have features from Lil Rey Howery, Colin O’Donoghue, Flula Borg who is hilarious as Jeff the Unicorn, John Ratzenberger and many more. It’s a good group that do gel well together for the most part.

Skydance Animation is a new studio that has stepped into the fray in regards to best animation studios and they came to make a statement with this movie. It is indeed in regards to animation very clean, very smooth, very alluring. Its bright and scintillating, very pleasant on the eye.

There are rain scenes where the puddles and droplets in the background just catch your eye, done so brilliantly.

Music, wise we get a cover from Eva herself performing Lucky Star so it was good to see her showcase her range from acting, voice acting and singing.

The movie is very relatable with its premise and characters. The levels of bad luck on display even started to depress me LOL. It was well put together at a good pace which made it all easier to digest because the film carried some heavy and important messages. Despite the Disney feel Luck holds its own in its own right. It ditches the princess position and gives us a more accessible and engaging story. It starts well and around the second act it gets quite messy with pacing and plot points that just feel they were used to stretch the duration of the film. It’s a kids film but the way it gets convoluted in that mid-section can really throw them off. If you or the kids are able to stick out then you are blessed with that wholesome feel-good ending. The messages around friendship, honesty, family and most of all not living life as a victim of circumstance all made it very nourishing.

Overall, I was definitely entertained. It had a good emotional core with some gripes around pacing but otherwise it’s a good watch for all the family. I have been given some confidence in Skydance and I look forward to seeing more from them… hopefully more original stories. Recommended watch!
