This is a showcase of a gamers paradise and nightmare rolled into one ?? we follow Arisu a young adult who is living out all our dream life, he’s unemployed and plays video games all day ? he meets with his friends and then they are sucked into a death match kind of game but in real life. You lose any of the games you indulge in, you die. Besides the title the show has more in common with our favourite childhood adventurer. The show is an akin version of Alice in Wonderland. Arisu being Alice and Usagi being the white rabbit (Usagi actually means rabbit in Japanese). A show that focuses on team work, regret, kindness, grief and all kinds of emotions. Show has a similar format to many shows we have seen and in the media industry we don’t have a term for this yet so I’m going to set a trend and create the term for it. The term will be a “regicide show/film”. Regicide means “the action of killing a king”.
As movie fans a regicide show/film means a show/film in which no matter how big of an actor you are in the industry, any and every character can die. For example: Game of Thrones is a regicide show.
Spread the term and thank me later ?
This show is a regicide show!!!
Season 1
What I liked most about this show is they did well to throw a high level of suspense and confusion on us the viewers. They created a dynamic where us the viewers are just as lost as the players in the show wondering what, why, where, how we go where we are. We know as little as they do within the show. So it’s like a joy ride we embark on together. The games are well thought out and again has us the viewers trying to figure out how to beat it as well. The tension, the gore, the suspense combined well to make it all a thrilling ride. Good cast, interesting characters, good action, excellent finale. Season ends answering majority of the questions you wondered at the beginning but then raises a million more questions.
Season 2
Kicks off exactly where we left off. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it is the message. More mystery, more characters, more gore, more games and of course more questions. Big focus on interesting characters this time round. Emotional, wise naked dude comes to mind ?
Tension and stakes are through the roof, for me best games would be solitary confinement and checkmate. The funny thing here is show runners I believe notice themselves these games are beginning to drag so they cut to a showreel of different types of games that our characters win then the plot for the finale, I’m glad cos it was getting repetitive. Good finale though. Does well to throw so many different endings to throw you off to then hit with “wow”. My initial guess was this Chishiya character must run the place cos the way he moves don’t make no sense to me, just flying confidently through games casually watching folk die lol.
There’s been no mention of a Season 3 but ideally I’m happy the way Arisu and Usagi’s story ended. By all means you can carry on the show but id rather they show us new folk.
A fun joyride which I would definitely recommend for Battle Royale type tv fans. Are you fully caught up? Do you want to see another season? Who was your favourite character? Did you enjoy it? React and comment below..
